First off you're gonna need to get the UXTheme Multi-Patchers to patch your visual styles.

Now I wasn't able to use the UXTheme Multi-Patcher, because I got an error.

Now I'm sure you won't get this error, but if you do, you can try, what I did, and install the FlyakiteOSX Transformation Pack, and once installed you need to restart your computer, and then uninstall everything, and you'll need to reboot again.

Now it's time to download, and install some visual styles. My favorite place to do that is DeviantArt.com, and to go to the visual styles section on that page go to Customization-Skins & Themes-Windows Utilities-Visual Styles

Download a visual style (make sure it has at lease a shell folder, and a .msstyles file, if there's more then that's good) and move the folder it comes in into C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Now right click your desktop, and select properties. Now if any of the themes you downloaded came with a .theme file, which generally comes with cursors, icons, wallpaper, etc: to make your whole desktop look different, and it's really nice. Example NeoGeniX That theme will display in the theme section when you open properties.

Now if it doesn't come with a .theme file, click the appearance tab, and click the dropdown menu for windows and buttons for the visual style you wish to choose from. After you've chose the theme you can select the color scheme as well. Once you've done that press apply/ok.

Now your desktop should have a new enhanced look towards it.

Now lets say you don't like the wallpaper or something in the visual style, but you wanna keep one thing. For example I don't dig the visual style as much as an XBOX theme I have installed so I'm gonna change my visual style to the XBOX theme, and the cursor set I don't like as much either so I'm gonna apply this Glossy Orb cursor set I made. (Refer here to learn how to change your cursors)

Now this is what my desktop looks like now.

To enhance your desktop, a little more try some desktop toys, some clocks, or some widgets to put on it so it looks more alive, and cooler.

So there you guys go on Changing Windows XP's Visual Styles.
