First off right click on an existing panel, and click on New Panel. (If you don't have any panels then this won't work, and you're out of luck, sorry)

Make sure it's positioned at the top, if not right click the new panel, and click on the orientation dropdown menu, and select top.

Now right click the panel, and click on Add to Panel...

Now add the applets that were originally on your Linux distro.

For example, because I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, I'm gonna just assume you're using it as well.

So now were gonna add the following applets below.

Menu Bar
Notification Area
Volume Control
Clock
Separator
User Switcher

NOTE: After the Menu Bar you have 3 icons, that you click to launch 3 programs quickly Firefox, Evolution Mail, and Help.

Adding Firefox:

1st Way:
Go to Applications-Internet and right click on firefox, and add it to the panel.

2nd Way:
Now right click the panel, and click on Add to Panel... and then click on Custom Application Launcher.

Name: Firefox
Command: /usr/bin/firefox-3.0
Icon File (firefox-3.0.png) Located = /usr/share/pixmaps

Evolution Mail:
Go to Applications-Internet and right click on evolution, and add it to the panel.

Help:
Name: Help
Command: /usr/bin/gnome-help
Icon File (gnome-help.png) Located = /usr/share/icons/Human/48x48/apps/

Now move each applet to where it's positioned in the screenshot below.

If you don't know how to move them right click one applet and click on move, now position it as seen in the screenshot, and click to have it stop, and stay.

Once you've moved each applet I want you to lock each one now, by right clicking it, and clicking on "Lock To Panel".
