Post Installing Linux (GNOME) Themes, Icons, and Cursors. Reply with quote
Well before we begin you'll need to download a new theme.

I recommend going here.

So for this tutorial I decided I would download, and install this theme, this icon set, and this cursor set.

Once you've finished downloading your theme(s) right click your desktop, and click on change desktop background, and click the theme tab.

You can click and drag the theme(s) you've downloaded into it, to install it, or you can click the install button, and browse for the theme(s) you've downloaded, and it should install.

Not A Valid Theme:

Themes
Open the theme you've downloaded and make sure it has 1 or 2 folders gtk-2.0 (recommended) and metacity-1.

Make a new folder on your desktop (I'm naming mine Simple), and move thoughs 2 folders in it.

Next you'll need to create a valid theme file, and the code to mines below, you can edit it to what fits your needs.

So open up your Text Editor (Applications-Accessories-Text Editor) paste the code in there, and edit it so it fits your needs.

Show Hide:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Simple
Type=X-GNOME-Metatheme
Comment=Simple Glossy Linux Theme
Encoding=UTF-8

[X-GNOME-Metatheme]
GtkTheme=Simple
MetacityTheme=Simple
IconTheme=black-white_2-Style
GtkColorScheme=fg_color:#d7d7d7d7d7d7,bg_color:#242424242424,text_color:#000000000000,b
ase_color:#d7d7d7d7d7d7,selected_fg_color:#ffffffffffff,selected_bg_color:#1717b2b2ffff,tooltip_fg
_color:#3d3d3d3d3d3d,tooltip_bg_color:#d7d7d7d7d7d7
CursorTheme=default
CursorSize=24
BackgroundImage=/usr/share/themes/tuxpenguin/tuxpenguin.jpg

NOTICE: If you don't have a metacity-1 folder then you don't need the X-GNOME-Metatheme part.

Once you've finished your code Save it as (Shift+CTRL+S) index.theme, and move it into your folder you pasted on your desktop earlier.

ex. I would move it into my Simple folder.

Icons:
Click the spoiler to get the code.

Once you've copied the code open up your Text Editor (Applications-Accessories-Text Editor) again, and paste the code in there, and again you can edit it to fit your needs, and save it as index.theme and move the index.theme file to your icon set folder.

Cursors:
Copy the code below, and open up your Text Editor (Applications-Accessories-Text Editor) once more again, and paste the code in there, and again you can edit it to fit your needs, and save it as index.theme and move the index.theme file to your cursor set folder.

[Cursor Theme]
Name=Apple_Cursors
Comment=Now, with the dreaded beachball!
Example=left_ptr_watch
